Metal filter mesh looks simple until the first project goes wrong. A mesh that retains the right particle size can still blind within a week, corrode in the process fluid or collapse under differential pressure. Choosing well means starting from the duty, not from a catalogue number.

Start with the six process inputs

Every reliable selection comes back to the same six questions.

Match the mesh construction to the job

Woven mesh gives a stable, repeatable opening and suits rated filtration, screening and electrode support. Knitted mesh is flexible and compressible, which suits gas-liquid separation and elastic elements. If you are unsure which route fits, read our guide to woven versus knitted metal mesh.

Pick the alloy for the fluid, not the budget

Stainless steel covers many duties, nickel alloys handle caustic service, and titanium resists chlorides. A cheaper alloy that corrodes in service costs far more than the difference at purchase. Our alloy selection guide sets out how the main families behave.

Think about cleaning and life from day one

A mesh that can be back-flushed, ultrasonically cleaned or replaced as a cartridge changes the economics of a filtration line. Decide how the element will be maintained before you fix the opening, because a finer opening rewards cleaning discipline and punishes neglect.

Confirm against the real application

Published ratings are a starting point. The final specification should be confirmed against the actual fluid, particles and installation, ideally with a sample run. This is also why a filtration supplier should ask you questions before quoting.
